Memo to the short-lived America First Caucus: YOU’RE A SMIDGE TOO PUBLICLY RACIST FOR THE GOP.

The last couple of weeks have been really huge for Republicans and racism, which, given their history, is impressive. Most obviously, we had the majority of the party deciding that one white cop being held accountable for his on-camera murder of a Black man was one too many and that Antifa-organized anarchy is right around the corner as a result.

And then Rick Santorum, apparently still around, talking about Native Americans not contributing to American culture like it was their own damn fault for being genocided and stuff. After which, at least as of this writing, he still got to keep his high-profile gig at right-wing cable news channel… let me check my notes… oh. CNN.

With everything going on, it’s understandable if you missed Marjorie Taylor Motherfucking Greene* and her failed attempt to start an openly-white supremacist caucus in the United States House of Representatives. And it’s a shame, because it’s a very clear picture on the Republican Party’s current stance on how open white supremacy can be.

The caucus was going to be called the America First Caucus, which is hilarious, because literally within five minutes of That Other Guy introducing his “America First” slogan, everyone who knew anything was pointing out that the slogan was reeeeeeeally big in the Ku Klux Klan, and Republicans spent four years arguing that just because two words were used by racists doesn’t mean anyone else who uses them is racist. You know, just like “Seig Heil”.<;/p>

But then the America First caucuses’ draft…something leaked to the press. It may have considered itself a “draft platform” but honestly, I’d hate to dignify a bunch of shitposts converted to a PDF with the name “platform”, even a draft one. Anyway, it was full of praise for “Anglo-Saxon political traditions” being “threatened when foreign citizens are imported en-masse” and wanting an infrastructure “that befits the progeny of European architecture” and that’s some shit straight out of the Daily Stormer and everyone knew it.

So how did the Republican Party react to this Nazi-ass bullshit, the three Nazi-ass representatives (Greene, alleged sex criminal and drug fiend Matt Gaetz, and Paul Gosar, who’s got an 80% chance of being the congressman in any headline about “spoke to a white nationalist group”) and known idiot Louie Gohmert, who somehow managed to not be officially on board before the shit hit the fan? They referred to “nativism” obliquely, told their neo-Klan faction to cut it out, and went on Tucker Carlson to talk about white replacement.

Which gives us a very precise measure of exactly how much open racism the modern Republican Party will put up with before quietly sweeping it 5% of the way under the rug and pretending it never happened and none of the people involved did anything wrong. It’s an epic shit-ton of racism, and the only reason it got stopped is because it was hampering the GOP’s efforts to stop Black people from voting and encouraging cops to kill as many Black people as they can. Because it makes them look racist, and they’re not racist! Just ask them, they’ll tell you!

*Just because she chooses not to use her full name publicly doesn’t mean the rest of us can’t.
